Special Events at MOSH in Jacksonville, Florida
NOW OPEN! – Richard
McMahan’s Mini Museum - Your favorite classic and modern works of
art are now on display at MOSH. Florida artist Richard McMahan created
a collection of more than 1,100 recreated masterpieces that will
astonish you. A few of the works included are da Vinci’s Last Supper,
van Gogh’s Starry Night, and Botticelli’s The Birth of Venus. He
hasn’t missed any of the details, down to the brushstrokes and the
historically accurate frames. The Mini
Museum will be on display through April 2009.
December 22-23, 29-31 –
Holiday Camps—Elementary school campers will study topics such as
holiday traditions. Call 396-MOSH, ext. 230 for more information.
December 24 & 25 –
MOSH Closed – In observance of Christmas Eve and Christmas Day,
MOSH will be closed.
January 1 – MOSH Closed – In observance of
New Year’s Day, MOSH will be closed.
January 2 – Winter Planetarium Programs Begin –
MOSH will unveil its winter Planetarium program schedule.
January 19 – Martin Luther King, Jr. Day
– Pay tribute to the great Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. as MOSH remembers
this important Civil Rights pioneer. Activities, appropriate for
elementary-school aged children, will include creating a dream quilt,
and developing a timeline of Dr. King’s life. The event will run
from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m.
January 29- Public Lecture for Old Ironsides
Across the Nation National Outreach Program- Time TBD, public
lecture on the USS Constitution, aka Old Ironsides.
January 31 – February 1 – Old Ironsides Across
the Nation Family Event- Old Ironsides Across the Nation brings
members of USS Constitution's active-duty Navy crew and a replica
of the ship's gun deck to cities throughout the country, providing
a glimpse of life at sea to all Americans. Family friendly activities
and demonstrations will be held.
February 7 – Water Education Festival – MOSH
has teamed up with the City of Jacksonville’s Environmental Protection
Board and the St. Johns River Water Management District to present
interactive displays, activities, and live performances. Learn about
water conservation and more on this FREE ADMISSION day between 10
a.m. and 4 p.m.
February 12 –MOSH’s human body exhibit (name
TBD) Opens – MOSH’s newest permanent exhibit, sponsored by Baptist
Health, opens this February. This grand exhibit features a realistic,
yet humorous, look at the human body. As visitors enter the mouth,
they will see the skeletal system overhead, and organs and body
systems below. They will also be able to see how various organs,
such as the heart, function within the body. Visitors will leave
through the exhibit with a deeper understanding of the human body.
February 14 – Bella Luna: Dessert Under the Stars
– The stars will be in your eyes this Valentines Day at MOSH’s second
annual “Bella Luna: Dessert Under the Stars” event from 7-10 p.m.
Enjoy the view of the downtown skyline from MOSH’s rooftop, then
gaze up at the stars, the moon, and even Mars through MOSH’s 20-inch-lens
telescope! Your romantic evening under the stars is complete with
chocolates, strawberries and other tantalizing sweets. Reservations

February 16 – Presidential Party – MOSH will
celebrate our nation’s past leaders in observance of Presidents’
Day. Children will be able to participate in a mock vote, create
presidential crafts, and test their knowledge of American trivia.
Activities will begin at 10 a.m. and end at 12 p.m.
February 28 – Black History Celebration –
Help MOSH celebrate Black History Month by honoring local African-American
heroes from the past two centuries. Visitors will learn about the
history of Jacksonville’s prominent African Americans through a
variety of performances and presentations. Activities will include
African folk tale storytelling, scavenger hunts, crafts, live performances
by local choirs, and a Planetarium show about the Underground Railroad.
The “Black History Celebration” will take place from 11 a.m. until
3 p.m.
March 27 – Women’s History Day—MOSH will
observe Women’s History Day with special activities focused on “Florida’s
Famous Females.” Activities will take place between 10 a.m. and
12 p.m.
March 30- April 3 – Spring Break Camps—Elementary-aged
campers will enjoy a week full of historical study, scientific fun,
and astronomical discoveries.
