Speaking of… Lecture Series
In 2009 MOSH successfully launched a lecture series entitled “Speaking of…” This series highlights the achievements of local history and science related professionals and their accomplishments. Speakers encourage and educate guests as they weave their own personal experiences and accomplishments into topics of interest.
April 3 – Maple Leaf Anniversary – MOSH will commemorate the sinking of the Maple Leaf Union Steamship, which took place April 1, 1864, with guest lectures. This “Speaking of… Maple Leaf Recovery and Recreation” includes lecturers Dr. Keith Holland, lead excavator of the Maple Leaf wreckage in the early 90s and Dennis Cannady, an artist who will discuss the ship-making process of his replica Maple Leaf model.
April 22 – Earth Day – MOSH will celebrate Earth Day through its lecture series “Speaking of… Flora, Fauna and Photography.” Presenter John Moran, has travel the Sunshine State with his cameras, seeking a vision of natural Florida as it must have appeared to Ponce de Leon and other early strangers in paradise. On photographing the nature of Florida, Moran says, “Truly a universal language, photography can help us better understand and appreciate the many gifts of nature bestowed upon this great state we call home.” Moran has been named Photographer of the Year for the Southeastern U.S. by the National Press Photographers Association. His photographs have been published in numerous books and magazines including National Geographic, Life, Time, Newsweek, Smithsonian, The New York Times Magazine and on the cover of the National Audubon Society Field Guide to Florida. Beginning at 6 p.m. this presentation is a partnership born of MOSH, RiverKeeper and the IXIX Chapter of the Florida Native Plant Society.
