Military Appreciation Day

On Saturday, November 11, MOSH salutes veterans with FREE admission for all veterans and their children ages 3 through 12.

We will also host a special meet and greet with Tuskegee Airmen: John Gay & Katherine Surcey at  12 – 2 p.m. This will take place within our current traveling exhibition, African Americans in WWII in our 1st floor gallery space.

About John Gay and Katherine Surcey:

John Gay was born in Houston, TX, and raised in Brooklyn, NY and also Houston, TX. He graduated from Phyllis Wheatley High School in Houston, and followed two uncles and a cousin to Tuskegee Institute in Alabama, later becoming part of the Class of ’53. He entered the United States Air Force, gaining engine ratings on: TF-80; F-94-C; F-102; F-105; F-101-B; B-66; and, F-106-D. He served a total of 17 and a half years and was hired by James O. Plinton, Jr., at Eastern Airlines as a Systems Analyst; with ratings on the 727, DC-8, DC-9, and finally the L-1011. Gay is a Registered Federal Administrator, retired from the US Postal Service (Postal Inspector and Manager), a member of AOPA, the CAP, American Legion and the current President of the General Daniel “Chappie” James, Jr. Chapter of Tuskegee Airmen, Inc., also a Member of the National Board of Directors.

Katherine Surcey, a native of Jacksonville, is the daughter and niece of Tuskegee Airmen Master Sergeant William Surcey and Lieutenant Wayman Surcey.  Her father (William) did speaking engagements with Tuskegee Airmen/historians John Gay and Ike James. After the passing of her father and Ike James, she began to fill in at speaking engagements along with Tuskegee John Gay. She is able to use her acting and teaching degrees and experience in helping to tell the story so it will not be forgotten! She has a BA from the University of Florida in Theatre and a Masters in Special Education from the University of North Florida. She is a proud “Tuskegee Airmen Heritage Member (registered children of Tuskegee Airmen)”. She is a board member and secretary of Elizabeth Edgar Hall Scholarships Inc. and continues to teach, DJ and act in movies, TV and stage.
