About Resist Hate, Repair the World: A Holocaust Family History
Helen Meatte, a second-generation Holocaust survivor, shares the powerful story of her family’s survival and loss — during the Holocaust, and how these events continue to shape her life.
Helen Meatte, her husband, and their two children moved to Jacksonville in 1987 from St. Louis, Missouri. She is a retired teacher who taught art and art history at the Bolles School. She currently volunteers with Art with a Heart at Baptist Hospital, serves as a docent at the Cummer Museum, and helps Catholic Charities set up apartments in the Jacksonville area for immigrants from all over the world. Eight years ago, while participating in a writer’s workshop, Helen began to examine her family’s Holocaust survival stories. This led her to join the LJD Jewish Family & Community Services’ Speakers Bureau, a group of speakers who meet with students, civic groups, and local businesses as part of the JFCS Resist Hate, Repair the World initiative.
