World Rivers Day Cleanup with the St. Johns Riverkeeper

About the Program

Join MOSH and the St. Johns Riverkeeper for a river clean up along the south bank of the St. Johns River in support of World Rivers Day. Participation is free, but registration and waivers are required through the St. Johns Riverkeeper. The link to sign up is below. Attendees will be provided admission to the Museum following the clean up. Attendees will meet at the front of MOSH before heading over to the river clean up.

Dr. Gerry Pinto, an associate research scientist in the Marine Science Research Institute and adjunct professor of the Department of Biology and Marine Science at Jacksonville University will host a presentation at 12:35 p.m. about the St Johns River’s health.

What to Wear/Bring:

  • Wear clothing that can get dirty!
  • Close-toed shoes are required. Rain
  • Boots, work boots, or waders can be helpful.
  • Bring a hat, sunscreen, bug spray, and water.
  • Disposable gloves are provided, but bring your own work gloves for more protection.

Safety Precautions:

  • Everyone must sign a liability waiver to participate.
  • An adult must accompany youth under 18 years of age.
  • Stay together and work in teams of at least two people.
  • Watch your footing, avoid steep embankments, and use caution when walking through tall grass or brush.
  • Do not use your bare hands to pick up broken glass or sharp items. Trash grabbers will be available.
  • Leave hazardous items, such as syringes or dead animals, in place and notify the Site Captain.
  • Do not try to pick up items too heavy for you to lift. When in doubt, don’t try and seek help.
  • Respect wildlife and keep your distance.
  • Take breaks as needed, protect yourself from the sun, and drink plenty of water.
  • Make sure trash bags are not too full to close and secure.
  • Keep tires separate from the trash bags
