MOSH Announces Selection of Dr. Alistair Dove as New CEO

The Museum of Science & History (MOSH)’s Board of Trustees today announced the unanimous selection of Dr. Alistair D.M. Dove as the Museum’s new Chief Executive Officer, effective February 5, 2024.

Dr. Dove comes to MOSH with more than 17 years of progressive experience at the Georgia Aquarium, where he has served as Vice President of Science & Education since 2020. His previous roles spanned multiple departments, including research, conservation, nutrition and development.

The Georgia Aquarium’s prestige as a tourism destination that serves millions of guests each year reinforces Dr. Dove’s experience as an exceptional asset for MOSH, both in its current location and as the Board prepares for a dynamic future at the Jacksonville Shipyards. Dr. Dove has firsthand experience managing complex, multi-million dollar budgets, helping develop engaging visitor experiences and building mission-driven, strategic partnerships.

“Al is a renowned scientist, an experienced educator, a captivating storyteller and a proven leader from a world-class institution. He’s the right fit at the right time and we can’t wait for him to get to work,” said William Magevney, Board Chair of MOSH.

Dr. Dove earned his Doctor of Philosophy, Microbiology & Parasitology and Bachelor of Science in Zoology and Parasitology degrees from The University of Queensland. His academic work includes more than 75 peer-reviewed scientific publications and one book, along with research and professor positions at Cornell University and Stony Brook University. Earlier in his career, he also served as a curator of aquatic animal health for the Wildlife Conservation Society. An Australian native and world-renowned shark researcher, Dr. Dove has spent significant time studying aquatic species and environments across the globe.

Leveraging his mastery of science, history, strategic partnerships and institutional leadership, Dr. Dove will continue to build on his experiences and strengths in this new position with MOSH.

“I am both eager and delighted to take on this incredible opportunity. MOSH is a cherished cultural institution and I look forward to leading this preeminent science and history museum through its current programming and into an exciting future through the MOSH Genesis project,” said Dr. Dove. “Public institutions like science centers and museums are trusted community voices and I take the responsibility of keeping them a vibrant and relevant part of the social fabric very seriously. I’m honored to use this role to advocate for greater awareness of science and history, the mindful stewardship of resources and restoration of our natural wonders. My aim is to make the thrill of discovery and the joy of lifelong learning synonymous with MOSH for the people of Jacksonville and beyond.”

The search process began in January 2023, when the Museum’s current CEO Bruce Fafard notified the board’s leadership of his plan to retire. MOSH engaged the executive search firm Kittleman to launch a national search in summer 2023, with an emphasis on candidates experienced in growing the capacity and impact of an organization focused on guest and member engagement. The committee selected Dr. Dove from more than 50 highly qualified applicants from around the world.
